They say if you're going to cut yourself, a sharp knife is better because it makes a clean cut and is easier to stitch up. As someone who is no longer allowed near sharp objects and power tools, I would tend to agree with that. I can now predict the weather with the part of my thumb that got superglued back on.
I got my favourite chopping knife about 30 years ago. It was pretty good for the first 20 years but I haven't been able to get a good edge on it for some time. I've even sent it out to be professionally sharpened a couple of times. But sadly the knife came back a little like the Eric Clapton standard, Alberta:
Where'd you stay last night?
Come home this morning,
Clothes don't fit you right.
Then I heard about the Accusharp knife sharpener. It was supposed to be "the best". I bookmarked the page and procrastinated ordering it for more than a year. Well last week I ordered it and it arrived by mail. (Actually it arrived by Uncle Victor who picked it up for me in Point Roberts. For 10 bucks I got a knife sharpener and a scissor sharpener – but they don't ship to Canada.)
It doesn't look like much. A plastic grip with a plastic strap that acts as a guard.
Knife on counter. Ninety degree angle. And . . . pull. Pretty easy.
And so sweet. I now have a sharp knife. Last night I chopped onions like they were butter. I can't believe it.
I love this little gadget. And if I ever get a machete, apparently it will sharpen that too.
p.s. Tegs will probably say I should have taken my own picture but, little grasshopper, think how messy that could have been.
