Baked Pita Chips

Today, while defrosting the freezer, I came across a bag of pita bread. I offered it to Krista, but she didn't want it. Because here's the deal - pita bread that's been frozen is dry and it sticks together and nobody really wants it.

I'm not even sure why I freeze it in the first place but I couldn't just throw it. Then I got to thinking. Pita chips are one of Paul's favourite snacks but they are so expensive. Maybe I could just make delicious pita chips with this dry old bread.

Turns out it's not only dead easy, but it's really tasty. So simple, I encourage you to give it a try. Or bring your dried out pita bread to my house and I'll do it for you.

No "before" pictures, because I didn't think of it while cooking - but it is really super simple.

Pita Chips
leftover pita bread
olive oil
salt
other spices or herbs, if desired

Heat oven to 375ยบ.
  • Brush olive oil on both sides* of each pita
  • Stack 2 or 3 pitas and cut into wedges (about 8-10)
  • Place wedges in a single layer on cookie sheet and sprinkle with salt or other herbs and spices (I used salt + ground ancho on half the wedges, and just plain sea salt on the other half)
  • Bake for 7 minutes - but watch carefully after 5 minutes so they don't burn.
  • Eat with hummus.
*To minimize the mess, I brushed the olive oil on one pita, then placed the next pita on top. I brushed oil on the top of the second one, then flipped it and brushed oil on the bottom. I did the same with the rest - piling a pita on top, making a stack as I oiled.
Ancho-spiced pita chips at top. Sea salt at bottom.
I let the ancho chips cook a little longer - by accident so they are darker, but still good.
